Bobby Stafford Shalom (The Peace of God) Peace November 18, 2012 Sunday PM Sermon

Shalom – The Peace of God

Introduction:

Read Numbers 6:24-26.  This was a very important blessing for the Israelites.  A silver amulet containing these words was found in a Judean tomb dating to the 6th or 7th century B.C.  This beautiful blessing reveals Jehovah’s desire to treat His people with favor and great peace (shalom) to them.

Body:

I.     What Is This Peace?

·       English word – absence of outward conflict; a state of inner calm

·       Hebrew word shalom – a sense of well-being and harmony, completeness and wholeness; tranquility even in the midst of trials and sufferings

·       Peace and pleasantness closely related  (Proverbs 3:13, 17)

·       Welfare or prosperity and peace  (Jeremiah 29:11-13)

·       Righteousness and peace  (Psalm 85:10)

II.   Who Is Our Peace?

·       Jehovah God  (Judges 6:23-24a, Psalm 4:8)

·       The Lord is the source of peace.  (Psalm 29:11)

·       Jesus is the Prince of Peace.  (Isaiah 9:6, Luke 2:8-13)

·       Jesus would bring a covenant of peace.  (Ezekiel 37:24-27) This is seen in Romans 5:1.                                                              [Christian age]  This is described figuratively in Isaiah 11:6-9.

III.          How Do I Find This Peace?

·       Sin results in the loss of shalom (peace, wholeness).               (Psalm 38:3)  The wicked do not have it.  (Isaiah 48:22)

·       Christ’s punishment brought peace.  (Isaiah 53:5)

·       Obeying God’s law brings peace.  (Psalm 119:165)

·       Peace follows righteousness.  (Isaiah 32:17)

Conclusion:

Read Numbers 6:24-26.  God still desires to bless His people with peace.            Jesus declared:  John 16:33, “These things I have spoken to you; that in Me you may have peace.  In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer.  I have overcome the world.”  NKJV
