Bobby Stafford The King And I  Psalm 72     Psalms

The King and I

Psalm 72

Introduction:

Consider what your life would be like if you knew you were going to inherit a kingdom so marvelous you would never be lonely, unloved, or even bored.  This would be a place of perfect peace and comfort; where there would never be any anxieties or concerns.  Listen as we describe the King and His Kingdom as found in Psalm 72.

Text:  Psalm 72:1-20

Body:

I.      A Righteous Reign  (Verses 1-7)

·       Israel’s king received his power from Jehovah God.  He was responsible for ruling according to God’s laws.  He was to rule with righteousness.

·       Jesus is the ultimate fulfillment of this psalm.  Isaiah 11 uses similar language in describing the reign of Christ’s Kingdom.  (Isaiah 11:1-9)  His reign would be one of peace between all people and nations.  (Ephesians 2:13-18)

II.    A Universal Reign  (Verses 8-11)

·       King of all the earth  (Psalm 47: 1-9), especially verses 2,3,7

·       Zechariah’s prophecy  (Zechariah 9:9-10, Zechariah 14:8-9)

·       Parable of Tares  (Matthew 13:36-43)

·       Remember there are two aspects of the kingdom, earthly and heavenly.

III. A Merciful Reign  (Verses 12-14)

·       Jesus went about doing good while on earth.  (Acts 10:38)

·       Jesus not only did good physically, but most importantly, the good He did was also of a spiritual nature.  (Luke 4:16-21)           All of us are the poor, the captive, the blind. . . due to sin.

·       The work He was engaged in is now upon our shoulders.  It is our responsibility.  (Matthew 25:34-40, Matthew 28:19-20)

IV. A Prosperous Reign  (Verses 15-17)

·       Prophecy of Amos   (Amos 9:11-13)   Note the words of            Acts 15:12-19.  Spiritual prosperity

·       The Kingdom exalted  (Micah 4:1-2)

·       Exceeding riches  (Ephesians 2:6-8)

·       Verse 17   The name of Jesus will be a vital, active force as long as the earth exists.

Conclusion:

Read Verses 18-20.  These verses are sometimes called a “doxology” – a hymn of Praise to God.  These verses remind us of Psalm 24.  It encourages us to worship the King who has ascended into heaven.

"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls."
