I Gave My Back

Introduction:

Isaiah is often called the “Messianic Prophet” because many of his prophecies are about the Messiah.  Examples:  Chapters 52, 53, and 61 are just a few.  One not often thought of is Chapter 50.  Our focus will be Isaiah 50:4-9

Body:

 I. The Lord Would Be an Effective Teacher (Verses 4-5)

  • Christ would be a great teacher.  John 3:2
  • Words would bring comfort to those in need.  Matthew 11:28-29, Luke 4:17-19
  • Father and Son spent time together.  Mark 1:35  The Son came to do the Father’s will.  John 5:30

II. The Lord Would Be Tortured (Verse 6)

  • “Offered His back” Jesus was beaten viciously with a whip made of strips of leather with lead balls and shards of bone.  This would cause gaping wounds.  Sometimes the veins would be laid bare and the muscle and tendons would be exposed.  Matthew 27:26  This was done to produce the maximum pain and unbelievable agony.
  • “Face swollen” The beard was plucked out.  Luke 22:63-65
  • Jesus endured shame and spitting.  Matthew 27:39-44, Mark 14:65
  • His teaching had brought much of this torture.

III. The Lord Would Be the Victor (Verses 7-9)

  • Jesus accepted abuse and pain.  He did not fight back.  Matthew 27:12-14
  • Jesus had steadfast determination to obey the Father.  Nothing would turn Him aside.  Luke 9:51
  • Jesus would be the real victor.  He had confidence in the Father.  Psalms 10:12

Invitation:

Read verse 10.  “Who among you fears the Lord?  Who obeys the voice of His Servant?  Who walks in darkness And has no light?  Let him trust in the name of the Lord And rely upon his God.” NKJV  God pleads with us to turn to Him in trust and obedience.

Matt 11:28-29
"Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls."
