Lord of
All Creation
Introduction:
(Psalm 104) God is Lord of all creation. Psalm 104 traces His
power from light and sky to land, sea, life, and seasons,
calling us to worship the Creator who sustains all things.
God
Creates the Heavens and the Earth (Psalm 104:1–13)
The psalmist begins with worship: “Bless the Lord, O my soul. O
Lord my God, You are very great.” God is clothed with honor and
majesty; the universe displays His glory like a garment. He
“covers Himself with light,” recalling the first day when God
said, “Let there be light.” Light is essential to life and
reveals God’s presence and power (1 Timothy 6:16). God stretches
out the heavens like a curtain and lays the beams of His upper
chambers in the waters. He rides the clouds, walks on the wings
of the wind, and commands His angelic servants (Psalm 104:3–4).
Scripture affirms both His nearness in sustaining the world and
His sovereignty above it (Amos 9:6).
God fixed the earth on its foundations so it will
not be moved by human power (Psalm 104:5). At His rebuke the
waters fled; mountains rose and valleys sank to their appointed
places. He set boundaries the seas cannot cross (Psalm 104:6–9),
echoing the Lord’s question to Job: “This far you may come, but
no further; here your proud waves must stop” (Job 38:8–11). He
sends springs into the valleys; beasts drink, birds nest, and
the hills are watered from His chambers. Creation flourishes
because the Creator continues to care for what He made.
God’s
Wonderful World of Nature (Psalm 104:14–26)
God provides directly and indirectly: grass for cattle, plants
for people, food from the earth, oil for refreshment, bread to
strengthen the heart (Psalm 104:14–15). This is why disciples
pray, “Give us this day our daily bread” (Matthew 6:11). The
trees of the Lord are full of sap; birds make their homes; high
hills and cliffs shelter wild goats and rock badgers (Psalm
104:16–18). God not only made creatures; He appointed places
suited for their lives.
He set the moon for seasons and the sun for day
and night (Psalm 104:19–23). No celestial body is worthy of
worship; they are instruments by which God orders time. Night
creatures seek their food from God; humans labor by day. The sea
teems with innumerable living things; ships traverse its
breadth; Leviathan plays where God placed it (Psalm 104:24–26).
The variety, balance, and vastness of nature declare God’s
wisdom.
God’s
Glory Endures (Psalm 104:27–35)
All creatures wait on the Lord. When He opens His hand, they are
satisfied; when He hides His face, they are troubled; when He
takes away their breath, they return to dust; when He sends
forth His Spirit, life is renewed (Psalm 104:27–30). Generations
pass under His providence. The psalmist prays, “May the glory of
the Lord endure forever; may the Lord rejoice in His works”
(Psalm 104:31–32). In response, the faithful commit to praise
and meditation: “I will sing to the Lord as long as I live” and
“May my meditation be sweet to Him” (Psalm 104:33–34). The Psalm
closes with hope for a world free from wickedness and a final
call: “Bless the Lord, O my soul. Praise the Lord!” (Psalm
104:35). Revelation 21–22 looks forward to that sinless home
where God dwells with His people.
