For You It Is Safe
Philippians 3:1–9

Introduction:
Philippians 3:1–9 teaches believers to rejoice in the
Lord, to welcome the repetition of sound doctrine for
spiritual safety, to beware of false teachers, to live
as the true circumcision, and to count all things loss
in order to gain Christ.
Beware of False
Teachers
Paul repeats truth for the church’s protection. He warns
of “dogs,” “evil workers,” and “the mutilation”
(Philippians 3:1–2). Such teachers attempt to bind human
traditions and select elements of the Mosaic Law upon
Christians. Acts 15:1 shows how these messages arise.
Paul exposes their work because error endangers souls
and divides congregations. Zeal without knowledge leads
to self-made righteousness (Romans 10:1–3). The church
must stay anchored to the gospel revealed by Christ
(Galatians 1:6–7).
Marks of the
True Circumcision
Paul identifies the people of God under the new
covenant: those who worship by the Spirit, rejoice in
Christ Jesus, and place their confidence in Him
(Philippians 3:3–6). True circumcision is inward, a work
of God upon the heart (Romans 2:28–29). Worship follows
the Spirit’s instruction through inspired Scripture,
which equips every believer for faithful service (2
Timothy 3:16–17). Joy centers on Christ the Savior, and
confidence rests in His promise of eternal life (1 John
2:25).
Counting All
as Loss to Gain Christ
Paul’s former credentials—birthright, training, zeal,
and reputation—once seemed like gain. In Christ, they
become loss and refuse when compared to the excellence
of knowing the Lord (Philippians 3:7–9). He gladly
releases every advantage for a greater treasure: to gain
Christ, to be found in Him, and to share the
righteousness revealed in the gospel by obedient faith
(Romans 1:16–17). This path often includes sacrifice and
hardship, yet it yields surpassing worth and secure
hope.
