God Created
Introduction:
Genesis 1:1 declares, “In the beginning God created
the heavens and the earth.” Those who grew up
hearing the story of creation are truly blessed. The
power of God to speak material things into existence
from nothing is beyond our comprehension. We worship
an awesome Creator who not only made the physical
world but also life, spirit, and new creation in
Christ.
The Material of the Universe
The first act of creation recorded in Genesis 1:1
reveals the Hebrew word
bara,
meaning “to create out of nothing.” Jehovah brought
the universe into being by His command (Hebrews
11:3; Romans 4:17). The psalmist reminds us that God
spoke, and it came to be (Psalm 148:5). Isaiah 45:18
tells us the earth was formed to be inhabited. Paul
later affirms that all things were created through
Christ and for Him, and in Him all things hold
together (Colossians 1:16–17). The universe is not
self-sustaining; it depends on God, who continues to
uphold it by His power. Because He sustains all
things, He can sustain the lives of those who trust
Him.
The Creation of Life
Genesis 1:20–25 records that God created living
creatures —
nephesh chay — those capable of willful,
conscious life. The Hebrew word
nephesh
implies awareness and soul, as seen in Leviticus
17:11, where life is linked with the blood. God is
the source and sustainer of all life, both animal
and human (Genesis 2:7). Life itself is sacred
because it originates from Him. David recognized
this truth, praising God while he lived (Psalm
63:4). Solomon likewise acknowledged that God alone
appoints man’s days (Ecclesiastes 3:12).
The Creation of Man’s Eternal Spirit
Man is unique among all created beings, for he was
made in the image of God (Genesis 1:27). This
likeness is moral and spiritual, not physical.
Humans are able to reason, choose, speak, create,
and worship. Man’s spirit comes directly from God,
who “forms the spirit of man within him” (Zechariah
12:1). Because we are His offspring (Acts 17:29), we
owe Him reverence, service, and obedience. Isaiah
42:5 declares that God gives breath and spirit to
all who dwell on the earth. Each new life, as Psalm
102:18 says, is another act of divine creation,
reminding us that every person is made for His
glory.
The Spiritual Creation — The New Life
in Christ
The Bible teaches that God’s creative power
continues in the hearts of believers through Christ.
Paul writes, “If anyone is in Christ, he is a new
creation” (2 Corinthians 5:17). This spiritual
rebirth changes our nature and destiny. The new self
is “created in righteousness and true holiness”
(Ephesians 4:24), “renewed in knowledge after the
image of Him that created him” (Colossians 3:10). We
are “His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for
good works” (Ephesians 2:10). Through obedience to
the gospel, God recreates us for service. Baptism
marks the beginning of that new life — “buried with
Christ” and “raised to walk in newness of life”
(Romans 6:3–4).
The Creator’s Invitation
From the beginning, God desired fellowship with His
creation. Revelation 21:3 reveals His ultimate
purpose — to dwell with His people forever. The
heavens declare His glory (Psalm 19:1), and the
gospel reveals His grace. His invitation is ongoing:
to know Him, serve Him, and walk as those He has
created anew.
Conclusion:
Our God is the Creator of all — material, living,
spiritual, and eternal. He made the universe,
breathed life into humanity, and continues His
creative work in those who are reborn in Christ. His
wisdom and love are infinite. Let us glorify Him not
only as the Maker of all things but as the Redeemer
who makes all things new.
