THE CRUCIFIXION

-Introduction

-Last Sunday morning, we began a = series of=20 lesson on God=92s pattern for New Testament worship.

-To begin that series, we focused on = the Lord=92s=20 Supper =96 one of the components of our worship.

&nbs= p; -We=20 looked at the institution of the Lord=92s Supper by Jesus, the emblems = to be used,=20 when

&nbs= p;  =20 and how often we are to partake, the purpose and who it is that is to = partake of=20 it.

-In regards to the purpose of the = Lord=92s Supper,=20 I said I hoped to further address that aspect of the

subject in an  = additional=20 lesson.  So, that is what we=92ll do at this time.

-Lord=92s = Supper =96 An Item=20 of Great Significance!

-When it comes to the Lord=92s = Supper (as with the=20 other parts of our worship as well) we need to

be careful that it does not = become =93just=20 routine.=94

&nbs= p; -When=20 we do things repetitively they sometimes loose their significance.  = We must=20 not let

&nbs= p;  =20 that happen with the Lord=92s Supper (or with the other parts of=20 worship).

-1 Cor 11:23-26 =96 =93in = remembrance=94 of Jesus =96 a=20 matter of utmost significance

-In = Remembrance of=20 Him

-The night Jesus instituted the = Lord=92s Supper,=20 He was betrayed by Judas and the events

surrounding the=20 crucifixion began.

-Sang = a hymn and=20 went to the mount of Olives (Matt 26:30), prayerful agony in the Garden=20

= of Gethsemane=20 (Luke 22:41-44), the mob came and took Jesus from the Mount of Olives to =

= Annas (John=20 18:21-13) and then Caiaphas (John 18:24) where He stood before the =

= Sanhedrin.  In this illegal gathering Jewish leaders falsely = accused Jesus=20 and ineffectively

= used false=20 witnesses against Him (Mark 14:55-64).  At this point, we have a = record of=20 some

= of the=20 physical and verbal abuse of Jesus which continued throughout the night = and into=20 the

= next day=20 (Matt 26:67-68).  Jesus stood before the Sanhedrin again =93when = the morning=20 was

= come=94 (Matt=20 27:1).  He was then led to Pilate (Matt 27:2) who then sent Jesus = to Herod=20

= Antipas (Luke=20 23:6-10).  Herod sent Jesus back to Pilate (Luke 23:11).  = Pilate=20 addressed the

= angry mob and=20 proclaimed the innocence of Jesus (Luke 23:14).  However, Pilate = gave in to=20

= the demands=20 of the angry mob that cried out, =93Crucify Him, crucify Him=94 (Luke = 23:21). =20

-Matt 27:25-31 - Jesus was taken to = =93Golgotha,=20 that is to say, a place of a skull=94 (Matt 27:33),

= and nailed to a=20 cross and lifted up to die a despised and shameful death in view of the=20 people.

-The Crucifixion

-It is = interesting that=20 the scriptures do not reveal very many of the details involved with the=20

=20 crucifixion.  We=92re told that the people continued to verbally = scorn and=20 mock Jesus as He

= hung there=20 suffering.  We=92re told of a few things that were said and done = during the=20 crucifixion

= but we are not=20 given very many details at all.

-I think = this is=20 another strong evidence of the inspiration of the scriptures.  = Mankind=20 wouldn=92t

= record such=20 a horrible event with the =93matter-of-factness=94 that we find in the=20 scriptures.

= Mankind=20 would be inclined to include the many details involved either in support = or in=20

       opposition to = Jesus.

-What are = some of the=20 details?

-The Details of the Crucifixion

-Most of = our ideas=20 about the scene of the crucifixion have been formed from artwork.  = That=20

= artwork excludes=20 some of the atrocities and misrepresents other details.

-For a = outstanding=20 lesson on the crucifixion, listen to Wayne Jackson=92s lesson at =

 =20 http://www.christiancourier.com/audio/inRemembrance.htm.

-Crucifixion was the=20 most horrible manner of death known to mankind.  It was utterly =

  = despised by the=20 Jews (Deut 21:22-23, Gal 3:13).

-It had = been used by a=20 variety of different nations:

= -Alexander the=20 Great, upon defeating the city of Tyre, had 2,000 of its people = crucified. =20

          -A = Jewish ruler=20 (between the Greek & Roman rule), Alexander Jannaeus had 800 = Pharisees=20

           =20 crucified.

-It seems = that the=20 process had been =93perfected=94 by the Romans.

-It began = with a=20 scourging:  whip with three leather straps with pieces of bone or=20 metal

-The = person was=20 stripped of their clothing and placed on a large slanted pole so that = their=20

= skin would=20 be stretched tight.  They would then be whipped from the their neck = to=20 their feet.

-The = skin &=20 muscles would be ripped apart and at times the spinal column would be=20 exposed.

-Many = went into=20 shock and died at this stage.

-The = person would bear=20 the cross or a portion of it to the site of execution where they would = be=20

= stripped of=20 their clothes and tied or nailed to the cross.  Of course, Jesus = was nailed=20 to the cross.

-The = nails in His=20 hands would have been nailed through His wrists.  In the Greek = language,=20

the word for =93hand=94 includes = the wrist=20 area.  The severed nerves resulted in excrutiating pain.

          &nbs= p;          =20 -The word =93excruciating=94 is derived from = =93crucifixion=94.

-In 1968, = archeologists=20 discovered the remains of some Jews who had been crucified upon the =

destruction of=20 Jerusalem in AD 70.

-One of = them had a=20 spike driven through his heel.  It seems that his two feet had been =

separated, one to each side of = the cross,=20 and nailed separately through the heel.  The spike

= that was=20 used was made of iron =96 7 inches long.  It was similar to a = railroad=20 spike.

-When the = person was=20 raised up on the cross, the weight of the body would immediately=20 cause

= the shoulders to=20 pop out of joint.

-The = victim=92s feet=20 were a short distance off the ground=96 from a few inches up to approx 3 = feet.

-The=20 bodies of most victims were allowed to rot on the cross.  = Therefore, dogs=20 and other

=  animals=20 would stay around the crucifixion sites and eat the bodies.  At = times, they=20 would

=  start eating=20 on the victims before they died.

-A number = of doctors=20 have studied the process of crucifixion and have determined two=20 primary

  = causes of=20 death:

          = -Hypovolemic shock=20 =96 low blood volume

&nbs= p;          =20 -As the body loses blood and other fluids, the kidneys shut down causing = insatiable thirst.

&nbs= p;          =20 -Under continued stress, the heartbeat became erradic.

          = -Exhaustion=20 asphyxiation =96 suffocation

&nbs= p;          =20 -The person could not breath in the position they hung in.  To = breath, the=20 victim had to

&nbs= p;          =20   pull up with their arms and push up with their feet.

          &nbs= p;          =20 -Mark 15:25 =96 third hour;  Matt 27:46 =96 ninth hour =3D Six = hours of=20 suffering.

-Summary and Invitation

-Crucifixion was the=20 most horrible and shameful method of death known to man.

          -Heb=20 12:2

-=93Out = of the ugliness=20 and agony of crucifixion, God accomplished the greatest good of all =96=20

   the=20 redemption of sinners=94 =96 (from Nelson=92s Illustrated Bible = Dictionary,  =A9=20 1986, Thomas Nelson

   =20 Publishers)  -1 Pet 1:18-23

-These = are the types of=20 things we should reflect on while partaking of the Lord=92s Supper =96 =

in = remembrance=20 of Jesus and what He suffered on our behalf and what He made available = to=20 us.

-Jesus = died on the=20 cross so that we could be saved.

-To be = saved, we must=20 not only remember His sacrifice, but properly respond to it.  Have=20 you?

          -Believe = (John=20 8:24), Confess (Matt 10:32), Repent (Luke 13:3), Be Baptized (Mark=20 16:16)

-We are = then to=20 walk in newness of life (Rom 6:4).  We aren=92t perfect so we = continually=20 need

            = the=20 forgiveness of God through Jesus =96 1 John 1:7-9.
