PREACHING

-Introduction

-This morning we will conclude our series of = lessons=20 regarding God=92s pattern for worship.

-Hopefully, this series of lessons has reminded us = of the=20 importance of our worship

  and the significance of it.

&= nbsp; =20 -It truly is an opportunity and a privilege to offer our worship to = God.

&= nbsp; =20 -To be pleasing and acceptable in His sight, it needs to be in the = manner He

         &= nbsp; =20   has prescribed.

-John 4:24

&= nbsp; =20 -To be pleasing to God, our worship must be =93in spirit and in = truth.=94

&= nbsp; =20 -Yes, we must incorporate the proper components of worship, but we must = also=20

&= nbsp; =20   do so with the proper attitude, focus and devotion.

-Hopefully, this series of lessons has reminded us = of these=20 things and re-affirmed them

  in our hearts and minds.

-To conclude this series of lessons, we=92ll = address the topic=20 of preaching.

-Must Be Pleasing to God

-It is important to realize that our worship is = ultimately=20 directed to God.  However, we

are the ones that benefit from it.

         &= nbsp; =20 -Lord=92s Supper - =93in remembrance of me=94 - God doesn=92t need to be = reminded of the=20

=20        sacrifice of Jesus - we do.  = It helps=20 to maintain our focus and motivation.

&= nbsp; =20 -We teach and admonish one another in our songs.

&= nbsp; =20 -Our giving is to be done with purpose.  Such purpose should make = us=20 mindful of

&= nbsp; =20   the blessings God has afforded us.  It should also remind us = of the=20 significance of

&= nbsp; =20   the work of the church which we are contributing to in both money = and=20 effort.

&= nbsp; =20 -Prayer - Last week we addressed the importance and privilege of = prayer. =20 =93There is

         &= nbsp; =20   always a blessing, a blessing in prayer.=94

-With preaching, a message from the scriptures is = addressed=20 to the congregation

(preacher included).  It is to = be done so=20 in accordance with God=92s word, ultimately to

  His praise, honor and glory.

         &= nbsp; =20 -Gene Wood=92s comments - If a preacher isn't preaching to himself, he's = not=20 preaching

         &= nbsp;           &n= bsp;           &nb= sp;           &nbs= p;        =20 at a high enough level.

-The goal of preaching should be to please = God. =20 However, the message that is pleasing

to God isn=92t always pleasing to men but it = is the=20 message that is most beneficial.

&= nbsp; =20 -Hopefully, we are working toward continuing to condition our hearts so = that=20

&= nbsp; =20   the message we need is also the message we want.

-Preaching and Worship

-It is interesting to note that the scriptures deal = very=20 little with preaching within the

  specific context of worship.

         &= nbsp; =20 -Acts 2:42

         &= nbsp; =20 -Acts 20:7

         &= nbsp;           &n= bsp; =20 -preached - (Strongs Concord.) - dialegomai - =93to say thoroughly, i.e. = discuss

         &= nbsp;           &n= bsp;           &nb= sp;           &nbs= p;            = ; =20   KJV:  dispute, preach (unto), reason, speak

&= nbsp;           &n= bsp; =20 -This is the word from which we get our English word =93dialogue.=94

-It seems that, in the early church, the preaching = was=20 sometimes more of a discussion

  than a presentation.

&= nbsp; =20 -see also 1 Cor 14:26-33 (in the context of miraculous gifts of the = Spirit)

&= nbsp; =20 -I=92m not trying to say that our current practice/method is = wrong.

&= nbsp; =20 -I=92m just afraid that we view preaching within a very narrow = scope.

-I=92m afraid that the church has unfortunately = narrowed the=20 idea of preaching to our

worship assembly.  Preaching should = extend much=20 further.

&= nbsp; =20 -As a result, we=92ve also narrowed our view of preaching to a view = individuals=20

&= nbsp; =20   rather than a personal responsibility.

-For a church to have 20/20 vision, it needs to = follow the=20 pattern of Acts 20:20 - teach/

preach God=92s word publicly and = privately.

-Paul=92s Instructions to Timothy

-2 Tim 4:2

-preach - (Vines) - kerusso - =93to be a herald or, = in general,=20 to proclaim, to preach=94

-be instant - be ready (NASB), be prepared = (NIV)

-in season, out of season - when it=92s convenient = and when=20 it=92s not

-reprove - (Vines) - elencho - to convict, rebuke,=20 reprove

-rebuke - (Vines) - epitimao - primarily =93to put = honor upon=94=20 then =93to adjudge=94 hence

         &= nbsp;           &n= bsp;           &nb= sp;           &nbs= p;            = ; =20   signifies to rebuke ... See charge

-exhort - (Vines) - parakaleo - (para - to the = side, kaleo -=20 to call) - to call on, entreat,

&= nbsp;           &n= bsp;           &nb= sp;           &nbs= p;            = ; =20 admonish, exhort, urge one to pursue some course of conduct (always

         &= nbsp;           &n= bsp;           &nb= sp;           &nbs= p;            = ; =20 prospective, looking to the future)

-longsuffering and doctrine - =93with great = patience and=20 instruction=94 (NASB)

         &= nbsp;           &n= bsp;           &nb= sp;           &nbs= p;            = ;            =             &= nbsp;           &n= bsp;=20 =93with great patience and careful instruction=94 (NIV)

-Summary and Invitation

-So, yes, the preaching of God=92s word is a part = of our=20 worship to Him.  But, the preaching

of God=92s word should extend much = further.

-It is the avenue through which God has decided to = reveal His=20 word/will for the saving

  of souls (Titus 1:1-3, Rom 16:25-26,Col = 1:23).

-How about your soul?  Is it saved?  Have = you=20 responded in obedience to the Gospel?

         &= nbsp; =20 -Believe (John 3:16, 8:24), Confess (Matt 10:32, Rom 10:9-10), Repent = (Acts=20 17:30,

         &= nbsp; =20   Luke 13:3,5), Be Baptized (Mark 16:16, Acts 2:38)

-If you=92ve already obeyed the Gospel, have you = been living=20 faithfully (Rev 17:14)?  If

not, confess your shortcomings, repent of = them and=20 pray to God (1 John 1:7-9, Acts

  8:22-24).
