THE LORD=92S = SUPPER=20

-Introduction

-Last Sunday morning, we addressed = the fact that=20 God provides patterns.

= -These patterns=20 provide organization (rather than confusion) and cohesiveness

      =   (rather=20 than division).

-They = are=20 authoritative and binding.

= -Therefore, we=20 are to conform to them and will be held accountable to them.

-In regards to specific patterns = provided by=20 God, I would like to address the topic of worship.

      -John = 4:24, Matt=20 15:7-9

= -These passages=20 (amongst others) show that there is a proper (acceptable) way to worship =

=   God. =20 Therefore, there are also improper (unacceptable) ways to worship=20 God.

-With these things being said, I = would like to=20 begin a series of lessons on the topic of worship.

-To begin this series, let=92s take = a closer look=20 at the Lord=92s Supper.

-The = Origination of the=20 Lord=92s Supper

-Matt 26:26-28; Mark 14:22-24; Luke=20 22:19-20

-The Lord=92s Supper was instituted = by Jesus=20 during the Passover on the evening of His betrayal.

-Let=92s note two items of = significance regarding=20 this timing.

      = 1.  Passover=20 =96 Ex 12:3-13

&nbs= p; -lamb,=20 male without blemish, token of blood, avenue of deliverance

          &nbs= p; -1 Cor=20 5:7, Isa 53:7, Jn 1:29, 2 Cor 5:21, 1 Pet 1:18-19, Col 1:14

= 2.  Night of=20 His Betrayal =96 On that very night, Jesus would be taken by His enemies = and the=20

=20      events leading up to the crucifixion would be=20 underway.  Through His crucifixion, Jesus

=20      would willing offer that which was represented = in the=20 Lord=92s Supper =96 His body & blood.

-Emblems to = be=20 Used

-Matt 26:26-29; Mark 14:22-25; Luke=20 22:19-20

-bread & cup (fruit of the = vine)

-Remember, the Lord=92s Supper was = instituted at=20 the time of Passover.  The bread used with the

  Passover was = unleavened bread (Ex=20 12:8, Matt 26:17, Mark 14:12, Luke 22:1,7)

      = -leaven =96=20 (Mirriam/Webster Dict.) =96 =93a substance (as yeast) used to produce = fermentation=20

          &nbs= p;            = ;            =             &= nbsp;           &n= bsp;   (as=20 in dough)=94

=20 -significance:  Leaven is sometimes used in the scriptures to = represent sin=20 and its influence.

          &nbs= p; -1 Cor=20 5:6-7

&nbs= p; -Jesus=20 knew no sin (2 Cor 5:21); therefore, the bread to be used is to be=20 unleavened.

-application of logic:  If the = bread was to=20 be unleavened in its representation of the Lord=92s body,

then the fruit of the vine = should be=20 unleavened in its representation of His blood.

-The debate of =93wine=94 vs = =93fruit of the=20 vine.=94

-The = word =93wine=94=20 in the scriptures can be used to describe both fermented and=20 non-fermented

      =  =20 beverages.  (see Isa 65:8 =96 unfermented; Gen 9:21 =96 = fermented)

      -In = the N.T., the=20 Greek word =93oinos=94 is translated as =93wine=94 and can describe a = fermented or=20

=  =20 non-fermented beverage.  The context must be used to determine = which type=20 of beverage.

-The = Lord left=20 the Lord=92s Supper out of that debate.  He did not use the word = =93oinos=94 but=20

=   used a=20 different phrase meaning =93the fruit of the vine.=94

= -application of=20 logic:  Since we are to use unleavened bread to represent the = purity of our=20

=   Lord=92s=20 body,  we should use unleavened =93wine=94 (fruit of the vine) to = represent His=20 blood.

-quick reference to the issue of one = cup vs=20 multiple cups

-When /=20 Frequency

-If we only had the accounts in = Matt, Mark &=20 Luke regarding the institution of the Lord=92s Supper,

we would not know when = to take the=20 Lord=92s Supper nor how often.

      = -Thursday,=20 Sunday, Friday?

-Acts = 2:42 tells=20 us that this was something the Christians continued to do.

      = -annually,=20 quarterly, weekly, daily?

-Acts 20:7 tells us that the = Christians in the=20 N.T. church, in accordance with apostolic authority,

partook of the Lord=92s = Supper on the first=20 day of the week.

= -Therefore, we=20 should partake on the first day of the week as well =96 not Saturday = night, not=20

=   another=20 night of the week, not for special occasions (i.e. weddings, holidays,=20 etc.)

-1 Cor 11:26 tells us that we are to = partake of=20 the Lord=92s Supper often.  But, how often?

-Here are a few things to = consider:

      = 1.  How many=20 weeks have a first day? =96 every week

      = 2.  the=20 principle of the Sabbath =96 Ex 20:8

&nbs= p; -How=20 many weeks have a Sabbath?  every week

&nbs= p; -The=20 O.T. scriptures reveal that each and every Sabbath was to be=20 observed.  (Rom 15:4)

= 3.  the=20 collection =96 In 1 Cor 16:2, Paul instructed the Christians to give on = the first=20 day of the

=20      week.  We are being inconsistent with the=20 scriptures if we gather each first day of the week

=20      to worship, give each first day of the = week but=20 not partake of the Lord=92s Supper each first day.

-The Lord=92s Supper is to be = observed=20 every first day of the week.

-Purpose of = the Lord=92s=20 Supper

-I plan to deal with this more in an = additional=20 lesson.  However, I=92ll briefly point out this crucial

aspect of the observance of = the Lord=92s=20 Supper.

-1 Cor 11:24-29   (vs 24 = & 25 =96=20 =93in remembrance of me=94)

-The Lord=92s Supper is to remind us = of the=20 sacrifice of Jesus =96 the giving of His body and the = shedding

  of His blood.

-To partake of the Lord=92s Supper = without=20 remembering Jesus is to take unworthily (vs 27, 29).

-Who is to=20 Partake?

-1 Cor 10:16-17

-James Burton Coffman, with = reference to the=20 Wycliffe Bible Commentary, said, =93The great principle

behind Paul=92s remarks here = is the truth=20 that =91Partaking of a religious table, whether Christian, Jewish =

or heathen, involves = fellowship with the=20 being to whom it is directed,=92 as well as with the

  participants themselves=94 = (Commentary=20 on 1 and 2 Corinthians, Firm Foundation Publishing House, =

  Austin, TX, =A9 1977, pg = 157).

-Who is the =93we=94 being spoken of = by Paul? =20 1 Cor 1:2 =96 =93the church=94 =96 the body of Christ (Col = 1:18)

-Those who are obedient to the = Gospel are those=20 who have had their sins washed away by the blood

of Christ (Acts 22:16, Col = 1:14, 1 Pet=20 1:18-19).  Upon obedience to the Gospel, they were added

to the church, the body of = Christ, by the=20 Lord (Acts 2:42).  They are in fellowship with the Lord (1 =

John 1:3,6-9) as long as they = live=20 faithfully to Him.

-So, = faithful=20 Christians are the ones who are to partake of the Lord=92s = Supper.

-Are you a faithful Christian?  = Are you in=20 fellowship with the Lord?  Do you commune with Him?

If you have not initially = obeyed the=20 Gospel, please do so! (believe =96 John 8:24, Confess =96 Matt = 10:32,

  repent =96 Acts 17:30, be = baptized =96 Acts=20 2:38).  If you=92ve obeyed the Gospel but haven=92t = remained

faithful, come back!  = (confess your=20 sin, repent, pray for forgiveness =96 1 John 1:7-9, Acts = 8:22-24)
