What Does the Bible Say About Repentance?

What does the church of Christ teach about Repentance?

Repentance is a turning from the world to God.

Acts 26:20
but declared first to those in Damascus and in Jerusalem, and throughout all the region of Judea, and then to the Gentiles, that they should repent, turn to God, and do works befitting repentance. (NKJV)

Acts 26:20
but declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all the region of Judea, and also to the Gentiles,
that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with their repentance. (ESV)

Repentance requires appropriate action.

 Acts 26:20
but declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all the region of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God,
performing deeds in keeping with their repentance. (ESV)

Revelation 3:2-3
...I have not found your works perfect before God. 3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent.
NKJV

Repentance is a result of conviction and sorrow of sin.

2 Corinthians 7:10
For godly
sorrow produces repentance leading to salvation, not to be regretted; but the sorrow of the world produces death.
NKJV

2 Corinthians 7:10
For godly
grief produces a repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
ESV

Repentance leads to/precedes salvation

2 Corinthians 7:10
For godly grief produces a
repentance that leads to salvation without regret, whereas worldly grief produces death.
ESV

Repentance is Necessary for Salvation

Luke 13:3-5
I tell you, no; but
unless you repent you will all likewise perish. 4 Or those eighteen on whom the tower in Siloam fell and killed them, do you think that they were worse sinners than all other men who dwelt in Jerusalem? 5 I tell you, no; but unless you repent you will all likewise perish."
NKJV

We are led to Repentance as a result of the goodness of God

Romans 2:4-5
Or do you despise the riches of His goodness, forbearance, and longsuffering, not knowing that the goodness of God leads you to repentance?
NKJV

The opportunity for Repentance is extended to all mankind

2 Peter 3:9
The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.
NKJV

Repentance is to STOP practicing a sinful life

Revelation 2:5
Remember therefore from where you have fallen; repent and do the first works, or else I will come to you quickly and remove your lampstand from its place — unless you repent.
NKJV

Revelation 2:21
And I gave her time to repent of her sexual immorality, and she did not repent.
NKJV

Revelation 2:22-23
Indeed I will cast her into a sickbed, and those who commit adultery with her into great tribulation, unless they repent of their deeds.
NKJV

Revelation 3:2-3
I have not found your works perfect before God. 3 Remember therefore how you have received and heard; hold fast and repent.
NKJV

Revelation 3:19
As many as I love, I rebuke and chasten. Therefore be zealous and repent.
NKJV

Repentance is a sorrow that leads to a change of heart which results in a change of actions.  This change must involve both a turning from the habitual practice of a sinful life and a turning toward God and His righteousness.
