What Does the Bible Say About God?

Introduction:
“ I am the Lord, and there is none else.” (Isaiah 45:5–6) Scripture reveals who God is and what He expects, so our faith and life may rest on His truth.

God Alone
The Bible affirms there is one God, the Maker of heaven and earth and the Lord of all. Isaiah proclaims there is no other, and He formed the world to be inhabited. (Isaiah 45:5–6; Isaiah 45:18; Isaiah 45:21) Paul echoes that the church is one body under one Lord, one faith, one baptism, and one God and Father who is above all, through all, and in all. (Ephesians 4:4–6)

God Is Just
God’s judgments are always right because His nature is righteous. He is a just God and Savior, and every morning He brings His justice to light. (Isaiah 45:21; Zephaniah 3:5) Even Israel’s promised King is just and brings salvation. (Zechariah 9:9)

God the Almighty
He measures oceans, weighs mountains, and needs no counselor. Nations are a drop in the bucket before Him. (Isaiah 40:12–18) Nothing is too hard for Him; with God all things are possible. (Jeremiah 32:27; Matthew 19:26) Creation itself testifies to His eternal power and divine nature. (Romans 1:20)

Unchanging and Truthful
The Lord does not change, and Jesus Christ is the same yesterday, today, and forever. (Malachi 3:6; Hebrews 13:8) Every good gift descends from the Father of lights, with whom there is no variation. (James 1:17) He cannot lie; His promises are sure. (Titus 1:2; 1 Samuel 15:29; Hebrews 6:18)

Impartial Judge
God shows no partiality; each person will answer for his deeds. (Romans 2:11; Colossians 3:25; 1 Peter 1:17) His judgments are according to truth. (Romans 2:2)

Gracious, Righteous, and Holy
He calls us to rend our hearts and return to Him, for He is gracious and merciful, slow to anger, and of great kindness. (Joel 2:13) He is righteous in all His ways. (Psalm 116:5; Psalm 145:17; Daniel 9:14) Because He is holy, He commands His people to be holy. (Leviticus 11:44–45; Leviticus 21:8)

Jealous for Exclusive Devotion
God will not share worship with idols. He is a jealous God who demands covenant faithfulness. (Joshua 24:19–20; Exodus 20:4–5) To mix the Lord’s table with the table of demons provokes His jealousy. (1 Corinthians 10:21–22)

Merciful, Compassionate, and Longsuffering
He does not forsake His covenant and invites prodigals to return. (Deuteronomy 4:31; 2 Chronicles 30:9) He delights in mercy, passing over iniquity. (Micah 7:18; Psalm 145:9) He is ready to pardon, gracious and merciful, and slow to anger. (Nehemiah 9:17; Psalm 103:8) He is abundant in goodness and truth, longsuffering toward sinners. (Exodus 34:6; Numbers 14:18; Psalm 145:8)

God of Truth and Judgment
His truth reaches to the clouds. (Psalm 108:4) Grace and truth came by Jesus Christ, and His word works powerfully in believers. (John 1:17; 1 Thessalonians 2:13) His judgments are righteous in the earth; He humbles the proud and rewards the righteous. (Romans 2:2; 2 Thessalonians 1:5; Daniel 4:37; Psalm 58:11)

Love, Faithfulness, and Wisdom
God is love; to know Him is to love. (1 John 4:8) He keeps covenant and mercy and cannot deny Himself. (Deuteronomy 7:9; 2 Timothy 2:13; 1 Corinthians 1:9) His wisdom and knowledge are unsearchable; the cross reveals His power and wisdom. (Romans 11:33; 1 Corinthians 1:24–25)

His Saving Will
He desires all people to be saved and to come to the knowledge of the truth. (1 Timothy 2:3–4) He loved the world and gave His only begotten Son. (John 3:16) The Spirit and the bride still say, “Come.” (Revelation 22:17)

Holy Majesty and Eternal Being
He cannot be tempted by evil and tempts no one. (James 1:13) He is eternal—the great I AM—our everlasting refuge. (Exodus 3:14; Deuteronomy 33:27; Psalm 90:2; 1 Timothy 1:17) He is infinite; the highest heavens cannot contain Him; His understanding is infinite. (1 Kings 8:27; Psalm 139:8; Psalm 147:5) His name is glorious and to be feared. (Deuteronomy 28:58; 1 Chronicles 29:13)

The Living God—Terrible in Majesty, Wrathful in Justice
He is the living God; it is a fearful thing to fall into His hands. (Jeremiah 10:10; Hebrews 10:31) His presence dispels fear because He is mighty among His people; He reigns as the great King over all the earth. (Deuteronomy 7:21; Psalm 47:2) His wrath comes upon the disobedient, and He executes justice through His appointed ministers. (Romans 13:4; Ephesians 5:6; Colossians 3:6)

Conclusion
God has revealed Himself so we may worship, obey, and trust Him. Let us respond to His holiness with reverence, to His grace with repentance, and to His love with faithful devotion.
